Let this be a lesson to you all.

Technological advancement is a good thing - we become more efficient because of it, saving time and money, we become more productive and it has expanded our entertainment. However when we experience rapid technological growth, we tend to overlook the negative implications that it has for society and may not realise it until it is too late. There have been a few incidents on the news over the past few months that revolve around the misuse of technology (internet technology in particular).

The video above is Edison Chen’s recent apology to the Hong Kong public after hundreds of his private photos have been leaked out in the Internet. I don’t care about the nude photos that he and his celebrities have taken, it’s their private matter and it’s none of anyone’s business if they do it for their enjoyment. However, in a conservative society such as Hong Kong, people do not approve of such actions especially if they are associated with role models (as Chen stated in his apology).

If he acknowledged the fact that he was a role model, then he has failed to take measures to protect himself, the victims and people who idolise him. Once the photos have leaked in the Internet, it spreads like a virus. In this digital age, things get transferred at a very fast rate and it takes seconds to download several megabytes of data. This is exactly what Chen has failed to recognise when he took his computer for repairs.

This is one lesson that we all must learn from.
