Mistakes

Today was a tuff day. My supervisor and I have discovered dozens of mistakes in my work, some of them were quite major. Features that were meant to be deleted weren’t modified properly beforehand and some features that should have been abandoned were deleted. My supervisor wasn’t very pleased with how I deleted and posted features from the system incorrectly without his approval and I was very annoyed with myself too. Fortunately, we could repair and fix some of the stuff that was not done properly and most of the features in the GIS were abandoned and not deleted. Although my supervisor and the others on my team didn’t express any anger, I felt pretty bad and was angry about it.

I have always understood that data accuracy and quality are essential when working on a GIS system that processes and delivers information to various people using it for various purposes. Those two non-repairable major mistakes in the GIS system would be passed on to other applications that replicate the data, to modellers who use the data for analysis and then to other businesses and organisations would make use of the data in the field. A chain of delays and errors would appear in system after system, which may be all linked to the system from which I am working on. I don’t like mistakes and I most certainly hate failures. But that’s just life. Some people have to learn by mistake. I am certainly one of those people.

Wii Play

After a week of hard work, I went down to EBGames at Chadstone and got my copy of Wii Play. It came with a remote, so I can play multiplayer games with my dad and my brother (when he comes back). It’s annoying though how it takes 10 seconds for the games to load after I’ve synced my second remote with my Wii and how the TV screen isn’t wide enough to play multiplayer tennis in Wii Sports. I also have to go through different games to unlock all them all. The shooting game was fun, but I got bored after a while and table tennis wasn’t what I expected. The best game out of all is Billiards - not as simple as the other games. I’ve never really played snooker in real life before so it is quite challenging for me. My mathematical/geometry skills are shocking, but I still like it. My highest table tennis score is now 52 and my Billiards score is 30…

Not well…

I don’t know what is wrong with me today, but I haven’t been feeling too well today. Usually, I have a reasonable productivity fixing 40 data records per hour, but today it sharply fell to only 10 per hour. I was alright for the first two hours this morning and felt very ill from 11:30 onwards. At first, I thought that it was simply not enough sleep, so I made myself a cup of coffee and kept going for another 30 minutes. All of a sudden, I felt pain in my abdomen - like stomach upsets. Since then, I had to visit the bathroom often and felt dizzier and dizzier in the aftenoon. I still kept going and stayed till 5:30 because there was a lot of work to get on with and I waited till I got less dizzy so that I could drive.

I don’t know what it was I’ve eaten that made me ill, but all I know is that my productivity had declined sharply today…

恭喜發財

新年快樂
年年有餘
利利事事

Not much of a celebration for me this year. There were some events going on in Chinatown and also at Box Hill, but after last year’s crowd in Hong Kong, I don’t have the motivation to go anymore. In fact, after the reunion dinner at Seng Hing, I was getting sleepy last night and went to bed at 11. This morning, I woke up with the intention of resting and making phone calls to say happy new year to friends and relatives.

Something that I didn’t get to post because the thread was cut off by a moderator

[” I use to love School up until end of 2006. I’m starting to burn out. So much school work, I don’t have the time for anything anymore i.e soccer, gym, tennis, swimming, and job. I only play tennis once a week now. And all my uni friends make uni seem so good. They say its a lot more flexible and less stressful (lies?) :P Its not like that at all!! “]

It depends. School was much better for me since most people at school were nice and friendly. School work was simple and easy - there wasn’t much to do. I did 5 subjects n year 12 and there were about 6 major assignment for each subject, so it didn’t bother me. On top of that, I had to attend compulsory badminton training sessions twice a week and sporting competitions on Saturdays. So school was fun.

On the other hand, uni was more isolated and there isn’t much interaction between people. It was harder to make friends at uni - either I was too shy, I had nothing in common with the people at uni or people didn’t like me. I did four subjects per semester - there were lots and lots of reading to do in preperation for tutes and pracs, three to four assignments per subject each semester and exams. 20 hours of uni each week, but it was very stressful!. Final year was even more stressful. I ended up spending my whole uni life studying. And i regretted it. Maybe I have become less social over the years. To make the best of your uni life: You do not have to attend every single lecture and join clubs, do exercise and try to achieve a study/play balance. I ended up doing to much study and no time to play.

Anyways, I should stop here. This is supposed to be a “positive” thread after all…
